Jack's Story
A 75-year-old man named Jack was diagnosed with hypertension by his family doctor. Jack's wife of 45 years and his daughter—an emergency room nurse—were both present when he received the diagnosis. During his discussion with the doctor, Jack acknowledged that he understood the problem, wanted to do something about it and would start to exercise and get the prescription he was given by his doctor.
During the car ride home, Jack told his wife and daughter that he didn't believe in taking medicine and since he had never taken any pills during his lifetime, he had no intention to do so at 75 years of age. A year later, Jack had his first stroke, paralyzing half of his body and affecting his quality of life considerably. His wife had to help him bathe, he needed regular in-home nurses, and they had to sell their family home and move into a one-level condominium so that he could use his wheelchair. A few months after his first stroke, he had a second.
